Jeremy Pern was the architect faced with the task, and the outcome was a spectacular success, one that has matured rapidly and that remains for all to see and savour. It is regularly voted in the top eighty courses in the land, one that is a true golfer’s course full of challenges, risk and reward holes, and affords great satisfaction when played well.
The front nine is an amalgam of spectacular holes that become seared into the memory banks, it is difficult to pick favourites, but two stand out, the 3rd, a par three from a high tee over a lake with no margin of error, followed by the par 5 fourth hole that literally has everything. An angled tee shot to a narrow fairway that breaks away to the left, then a very narrow lay up area, impossible to go for the green for mere mortals, before the approach to an elevated green protected by lakes along the left edge. The golf masochist’s dream.
Accommodation is provided in the recently refurbished three star hotel, comfortable en suite rooms with stylish furnishings, many of which have panoramic views across the golf course. It boasts unrivalled health and leisure facilities which are free for guests, swimming pool, sauna, spa bath sunshower, and an extensively equipped gymnasium for those with energy left after the golf. For those wishing to be pampered after the exertion, there are resident beauty therapists offering a range of treatments.
Add the first class bar and bistro and the resort provides the total golf package that ticks all the boxes for a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The resort has a new excellent conference facility that is now available for use, and an extensive variety of breaks in addition to golf, involving activity breaks, horseracing breaks, spa breaks and many others. There is also the option to rent one of the very well equipped cottages that are on the site, a compact little hamlet style development that offers that something a little different.
